James (AKA Phineas)
Role: Main protagonist, Operative
Background:
James, known in his covert work by the alias Phineas, is a man shaped by his experiences in both the military and the shadowy world of clandestine operations. In his early years, he was a soldier, quick to act, but perhaps too idealistic for the harsh realities he would face. He grew disillusioned with authority and the bureaucracy of war, finding solace in more independent work after leaving the army. However, his deep sense of duty and his desire for order within the chaos kept him tethered to the mission. His loyalty, though, is not to any specific group or cause—it's to the code of survival. He’s seen enough bloodshed to know that no one really wins in these wars, but there’s a deep pragmatism in him that he clings to, even if it means doing questionable things. His complex view of morality has often placed him in situations where he’s forced to choose between the greater good and his personal values. For example, tonight’s mission: removing bodies to prevent an escalation of violence. In his mind, it's about reducing collateral damage and making sure his allies survive. But there’s a cold detachment in his decision-making, a side of him that’s seen so much death it’s become routine. That’s not to say he lacks empathy—he has a soft spot for those who get caught in the crossfire—but when it comes to the mission, he operates with surgical precision, often suppressing any emotional reaction.
James’ past is full of loss—friends who became enemies, missions that went awry, and personal relationships shattered by the constant weight of the war. The loss of his mate to the ‘nutting squad’ still haunts him, even if he tries to suppress it. He views this task as something personal, a way of honoring that fallen friend. However, it’s also an opportunity for him to regain some sense of control in an unpredictable world.
Personality:
James is quiet, methodical, and emotionally distant. He struggles with intimacy, perhaps as a result of the nature of his work. He’s not someone who easily lets people in, but when he does form bonds, they are deep and unshakeable. His sense of duty overrides most other impulses, but he still carries a burden of guilt for the things he’s had to do, even if he believes it’s the only way to survive.Motivation:
Survival and duty. James feels trapped in a world where violence is the currency, and the lines between right and wrong are blurred. He doesn't dream of a future; he simply gets through each day, one mission at a time. But the looming question is whether he can ever truly escape the life he’s chosen, or if he's doomed to keep repeating the same cycle until it consumes him. -

Bjorn
Role: Agent with Swedish Intelligence Service
Background
Bjorn Lindqvist was shaped by edges – the northern margins of Gothenburg, the cold push of the Kattegat winds, and a childhood that demanded endurance rather than comfort. He learned early that stability was temporary and that survival came from reading situations faster than the people around you. With a mother always working and a father more absent than present, Bjorn raised himself on instinct, grit, and a quiet refusal to depend on anyone. He wasn’t cruel or reckless by nature – just restless, driven by an energy that needed an outlet or it would tear him apart.
As a boy, that energy spilled into defiance. Bjorn tested limits because limits were the only things that proved real. He climbed where he wasn’t meant to, stole what he needed, and slipped unnoticed through systems built to contain him. Smuggling routes, black markets, and coastal backchannels taught him geography, logistics, and human weakness long before any classroom could. He wasn’t malicious – he simply refused to be caged.
Personality
Bjorn is blunt, observant, and intolerant of incompetence. He speaks little, listens carefully, and rarely reveals more than necessary. Beneath the untidy exterior and unshaven calm is a mind that never stops calculating angles, exits, and probabilities. He values loyalty over charm and action over explanation, and once his trust is earned, it is absolute.
Despite his hard edges, Bjorn is not unfeeling. He has a strict internal code and an instinctive dislike of bullies, posturing, and wasted authority. He respects people who know their craft and despises those who hide behind rank or ideology. His wildness never fully left him – it was simply disciplined, turned inward, and sharpened.
Motivation
At his core, Bjorn is driven by control – not over others, but over himself. He fears stagnation more than danger and purpose matters more to him than comfort. The army, and later intelligence work, gave him structure without suffocation and rules that made sense because they achieved results.
Bjorn does not chase recognition, patriotism, or legacy. He is motivated by outcomes – stopping threats before they surface, fixing problems others create, and ensuring chaos stays contained. He operates best in the margins, where clarity replaces noise and decisions matter. For Bjorn, the work is not about glory or redemption – it is about proving, quietly and relentlessly, that he belongs exactly where he stands.

Stella
Role: Handler, Operative
Background:
Stella is a woman who has spent her life navigating the dangerous world of espionage, paramilitary operations, and the web of lies that holds it all together. She’s a woman with a past that few know anything about—a past full of both betrayal and loyalty. Raised in a family with deep political connections, she was trained early on to understand the power dynamics at play in the world of intelligence and covert operations. Her education was as much about survival as it was about strategy, and she’s used that knowledge to her advantage, working with both sides of the conflict when necessary. What makes Stella dangerous is her ability to remain calm and collected in the face of extreme pressure. She’s cold, calculating, and ruthless when it comes to getting things done. But beneath the steel exterior, there’s a sharp mind that questions everything. She’s not entirely loyal to any one cause—her loyalty lies to the mission, and that makes her an unpredictable ally. Her appearance, once soft and approachable, has become harder over the years, reflecting the emotional toll of her work. She has a strong presence, and people tend to follow her without question, either out of respect or fear.
Her connection with James is complex—there’s a certain familiarity between them, perhaps a shared history that neither of them fully acknowledges. They work well together, but there’s an unspoken tension that lingers between them, one that neither of them fully understands or addresses.
Personality:
Stella is an enigma. She’s professional to the core, but she’s also deeply introspective, often questioning the morality of the actions she takes. Despite her cold demeanor, she’s not entirely without empathy, though she keeps it buried deep within. She’s manipulative when she needs to be, but her actions are always calculated. She can seem detached, even cruel, but she’s always three steps ahead of everyone else.Motivation:
Stella’s motivation is one of control. She wants to maintain order in the chaos of the world around her, and she’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that the right outcomes are achieved. Whether that means playing both sides or making tough decisions, she’s willing to sacrifice whatever is necessary. But underneath it all, there’s a desire for stability and a life beyond the constant danger of her profession, though she may never admit it. -

Jonathan
Role: Superior, Handler
Background:
Jonathan is a man of power and influence, someone who operates in the shadows of the intelligence community, pulling strings without ever being seen. He comes from a lineage of people who have been involved in intelligence and covert operations for generations, giving him a deep sense of entitlement and authority. His career is defined by pragmatism and control. He believes in order above all else, and his dealings are always calculated to ensure that the right people stay in power, and the right decisions are made, even if those decisions are morally ambiguous.Jonathan’s relationship with James is professional, but it’s also one of respect. James is one of his most trusted operatives, someone who gets the job done when no one else can. But Jonathan is a man who always expects results and often pushes his agents to their limits. He knows how to manipulate those around him to ensure compliance, and he’s not above using psychological tactics to get what he needs. His authority is absolute, and his cold demeanor hides a sharp intellect capable of seeing through even the most complicated of situations.
Personality:
Jonathan is calculated, authoritative, and unwavering in his belief that the end justifies the means. He’s a man who thrives on control and precision. He’s not easily rattled and prefers to stay in the background, orchestrating events from the shadows. Though he appears detached, he’s deeply aware of the emotional toll his agents endure, and he knows exactly how to push them to get the results he desires.Motivation:
Jonathan’s motivation is the preservation of order and control. He believes that the system is what keeps society intact, even if that system requires morally questionable actions. He’s willing to sacrifice individuals for the greater good, but he’s also willing to protect those who prove themselves valuable. His vision is one of stability and power, even if it comes at the cost of those who serve him. -

Gemma

Age: Mid-30s
Physical Description: Tall and athletic, with an almost feline grace. Her beauty is sharp and striking, with high cheekbones, piercing blue or green eyes, and a smirk that never quite reaches them. Her hair is often tied back, sleek and professional, and she dresses in form-fitting tactical gear or elegant, understated clothing that allows her to blend in.Personality: Gemma is the embodiment of cold efficiency. Highly trained in assassination, interrogation, and psychological manipulation, she is both alluring and deadly. She operates with a ruthless pragmatism, taking pleasure in eliminating targets. Her loyalty to MI5 is absolute, but she enjoys playing games with those around her, particularly James. She has a sharp wit and an almost playful attitude toward violence, making her one of the most feared operatives.
Motivations: She thrives on control and power, enjoying the feeling of being the hunter. While she may have had genuine feelings for James once, those emotions have long since been buried under layers of training and detachment.
Relationships:
James – Former lover, sees him as both an ally and a challenge.
Stella & Jonathan – Superiors whom she respects but would not hesitate to manipulate.
-

Andrew
Role: Director General of MI5, James’s Ultimate Superior
Age: Late 50s – Early 60sPhysical Description: Andrew has the presence of a man who has spent years in the corridors of power. Tall and broad-shouldered, he carries himself with an air of quiet authority. His graying hair is always neatly combed, and he wears tailored suits that speak of influence and control. His face is lined, not from age alone, but from the weight of decisions that have shaped national security. His eyes are cold and calculating, revealing little emotion—only an unwavering sense of purpose.
Personality: Andrew is a master of the long game. Highly intelligent, pragmatic, and utterly ruthless when necessary, he views the world in terms of strategic advantage. He does not concern himself with sentimentality, nor does he allow personal feelings to interfere with his decisions. He understands that sacrifices must be made for the "greater good" and has no hesitation in ordering eliminations if it serves the interests of MI5 and national security.
Unlike Jonathan and Stella, who are directly involved in operational oversight, Andrew operates from the highest level, pulling the strings behind the scenes. He rarely gets personally involved with field agents, but when he does, it is usually for matters of extreme importance. His mere presence commands attention—when Andrew speaks, people listen.
Motivations:
Maintaining MI5’s dominance in the intelligence world.
Preserving national security at all costs, even if it means operating outside legal or ethical boundaries.
Ensuring that no one—especially not an operative like James—threatens the careful balance of power he has built.
Relationships:
James Madison – Sees him as an exceptional but expendable asset. While he recognizes James’s efficiency, he also views him as a potential liability due to his growing disillusionment with MI5.
Jonathan & Stella – His trusted subordinates who execute his will with precision. He expects results and has little patience for failure.
The Prime Minister & Government Officials – Works in the shadows to ensure they have the intelligence they need while keeping the messier parts of MI5’s work hidden from public scrutiny.
Role in the Story:
Andrew represents the faceless power behind MI5, the man who ultimately decides who lives and who dies. He is the architect of the operations James is caught up in, but he is distant—always several steps removed from the actual bloodshed. However, if James were ever to become a true problem for MI5, Andrew would not hesitate to eliminate him just as easily as any enemy of the state.
